Description

Messier 109 is a barred spiral galaxy at a distance of approximately 84 Mio.Lyrs. It's surface brightness outside the central region is relatively low. A composite of one-shot RGB and Hα narrow band data with continuum subtraction!

The galaxy shows regularly distributed H-I regions inside the disc, however, there is a H-I hole in the bar. This is revealed by the added H-alpha information.

M109 is located very close to the bright stars of the constellation of Ursa Major (Phecda with 2.4mag). The full field of view shows this nice contrast between the faint galaxy and the bright foreground star.
