Description

I recently added an RC8 scope to complement my C11 Edge.  It will image from an EQ-6R Pro mount that will be mounted on a pier near my roll off roof observatory. Luckily, it was very well collimated out of the box - other than my usual and ongoing tilt issues.  Still in the early testing phase, but for this image it provided all RGB and some Ha data as I switch from SGP to NINA acquisition software.

M96 (NGC 3368) is a spiral in Leo and is over 30 million light years distant with an overall mass and diameter similar to the Milky Way.  Discovered by French astronomer Pierre Mechain in 1781, it has a core displaced from center with ill-defined spiral arms and dust and gas distributed asymmetrically.  It is the brightest galaxy within the M96 group which also includes M95 and M105 and displays some features that may be influenced by the gravitational pull of other galaxies within its group.  Visually, just below the core and appearing to be embedded within one of the spiral arms is the large edge-on galaxy 2MFGC 08391 at about 700 million light years distant.

Imaged over several nights:  Feb 22, 24; Mar 2, 16, 20-21, 2023.
