Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a Seyfert double ring spiral galaxy located 85 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -23 degrees.  It is a magnitude 13.5 galaxy which spans 2.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years.

I love double ring galaxies.  This one is special because of the contrasting colors – a blue ring on the outside and a yellow ring on the inside.  Note the faint outermost third disk extending beyond the blue outer ring.

This object is also special because it has 2 bars - a bar that spans the inner ring and a bar that spans the outer ring.  Note that both of the rings are subtly brighter and more colorful at each end of the bar.  This is most noticeable in the blue ring.

The mouseover Hubble image is fascinating, revealing 3 distant galaxies through the disk.
