This glowing nebula in Cepheus is being energised by the bright star sitting near its middle. IC 1396 (or Sharpless 131) is 3,000 light years away and hundreds of light years across. It is best know for one feature, which you can make out in this image just above the bright central star, at twelve o'clock: the Elephant's Trunk Nebula. Within this peculiarly-shaped, dark and dense region stars are forming.
LRGB image created using PixInsight (for calibration, registration, integration) and Adobe Lightroom (for cosmetic adjustments). 300s exposures (61xL, 66xR, 52xG, 47xB). Captured in New Mexico at Deep Sky West, using a QSI WSG-5 CCD Camera and a 135mm f/2 Rokinon lens.
