Description

Object: California Nebula NGC 1499 (2012)

An emission nebula located in Perseus. Its name comes from its resemblance to the state of California in the US. A very large nebula of almost 2.5° long, the structure is difficult to observe visually due to low surface brightness. Distance from earth is approximately 1800 light years. The bright star to the right of the nebula is Menkhib one of the hottest stars visible in the night sky at about 65,000F (~36,000C), which is 6 times hotter and 40 times the mass of our own sun, Menkhib was born in the California nebula a few million years ago.
