Description

M78 is a reflection nebula in Orion. The darkest patches are dense knots of gas and dust that will eventually birth new stars. The bluish areas are more diffuse gas reflecting the light of hot young blue stars. The reddish area to the left is an emission nebula, ionized hydrogen excited by the light of the young stars.

I acquired this data over 4 nights in mid January near the new moon. But seeing was poor most nights and some nights had transparency problems (high clouds). So my strategy was to take as much data as possible and then sort out the best and throw the rest away. I ended up taking ~450 subs for each of R, G and B which I narrowed down to the ~200 best of each.

Dates: 1/11/2021 - 1/14/2021

Gain 120, temp -20C, 2x2 binning

R: 216 x 180 sec

G: 201 x 180 sec

B: 226 x 180 sec

Total integration: 643 subs for 32.15 hours
