Description

Galaxy NGC 3079 and the twin quasar QSO 0957+561 (2 dots, lower left).
QSO 0957+561 lies at a distance of 8.7 billion ly and is one of the first observable effects of gravitational lensing as described by general relativity. A foreground massive galaxy (not visible) warps space time so that one object appears as two. There is a difference in the light travel time between the two images of ~417 days or 1.1 ly. Cool!
