Description

This is an custom 2x drizzled (reduced 50% for AstroBin) SHO-type narrowband image of the Cygnus Loop, the shell of a supernova remnant. The image was taken over many nights in 2020. Most images of this area are HOO (Ha and OII only) bi-color images. This image includes SII but I did not use it as part of the red channel. Instead, I blended 50% SII and 50% OIII for green which results in a more distinct color palette. I'll be adding an HOO-style palette version in the coming days.

This loop has distinct parts which go by many catalog entries and names, including:

* NGC6960 / Witch's Broom / Western Veil Nebula

* NGC6992 and NGC6995 / Eastern Veil Nebula

* Pickering's Triangle

* Veil Nebula

The cause of the explosion, which likely remains as a neutron star, has not yet been found. Based on scientific studies and calculations, it is estimated to have been roughly in the center of this image.
