Yesterday, on my way back from shopping cow dung for my veggies, I got into a traffic control. The officer said "Haisai!" (this is Okinawan for 'Hello'), this is a routine alcohol check... "Ooy" (this is Okinawan for 'Hey')... you smell like "Fun" (this is colloquial Japanese for 'Shit"). I was lucky, most Japanese people speak broken English only. He might have said "hello, you look like fun". But then he felt safer and used English: "you go where?" "I'm going home to photograph stars". "Stars? Robert de Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Chuck Norris? I am Cop, you crazy!" "You bet your pension I am".

The night reminded me on my time in Tokyo, the moon, bright planets, no more, and as suspected, turbulent air. Since even an IR-pass filter won't be of much help I made sure to choose exposure times under 5ms, et voilà, not too bad a yield, although I discarded six images.

The original, final image is a mosaic of 6 panels, exposure 0.6ms at gain 150, native 750mm focal length. The images in the review are taken at FL=1500mm. All images are stacks of 600 frames in 8-bit raw, 138fps, 1.5x drizzled. The icon of Mars (22.3") is inserted to scale.

The nights are becoming more comfortable to spend at the scope since temperatures dropped notably below 30° at less humidity, however, the autumn high clouds are moving sluggishly. "Fun"!

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
