IC 4601 is a small part of a complex of blue reflection nebulae, dark absorption nebulae, with a touch of hydrogen emission nebulae that constitute the broader IC 4605 nebula complex, which spans more than 10 sq degrees in the southern sky. This cloud complex hosts many young stars and is the closest star-forming region to us at 460 ly.
