Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as NGC 4211, is a pair of interacting galaxies located 300 million light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices at a declination of +28 degrees. In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Elliptical Galaxies Connected to Spirals.

The large elliptical is the magnitude 14 galaxy MCG+05-29-042. It spans 1.2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a Milky Way like diameter of 110,000 light years. Shell structures are visible, signs of interaction with its companion.

The smaller spiral companion is the magnitude 16 galaxy MCG+05-29-043. The thin star stream extends for 100,000 light years below the core.

The nice barred ring spiral galaxy to the lower left is UGC 7287, 370 million light years away and 120,000 light years in diameter.
