Description

M5,Serpens Caput: Considered by many including myself to be one of the finest globular in the northern skies. In processing this image, I am reminded of a time in the early 70’s at Fremont Peak California climbing the ladder with my young eyes and peering through the eyepiece of John Dobson’s 24”er. M5 was an amazing site.

M5 is one of the largest Globular Clusters Known spanning nearly 100 light years, Residing in the galactic halo at a distance of some 25,ooo light years it is estimated to be 13billion years old and nearly twice the age of our solar system.

It has an abundance of RR Lyrae variable stars 100 or more with periods of 0.5 days, with only Omega Centauri and M3 having more.

The bright 5th magnitude star off the the lower left (south east) is a double star type F8iii-IV magnitude 5.04 and Magnitude 5.05 companion a buldge visable to the lower right of stellar center. There is a distinct dimmer star visible in the glow to the upper left making the stellar ensamble look a little strange.
