Hace 30 años, mi primera astrofotografía – Scorpius

Esta es mi primera astrofotografía, realizada hace la friolera ya de 30 años, el 18 de junio de 1990 desde Chiloeches (Guadalajara).

Se trata de una toma de 15 minutos de exposición, sobre una película Kodak Gold de 100ASA. En ella se ve casi toda la constelación de Scourpius, centrada en la brillante estrella Antares de intenso color rojo, a cuya derecha se observa el cúmulo globular M4 como una débil manchita grisácea. En la parte de abajo se adivinan los cúmulos estelares abiertos NGC6281 al Este de la estrella doble Mu Scorpii, NGC6227-6231 al Norte de la doble Zeta Scorpii y NGC6124 a su Oeste.

Realizada con un modesto equipo compuesto por una montura ecuatorial Ret-45 de Alstar, seguimiento manual con unos prismáticos 10x50 a los que le hice una crucera con unos hilos de cobre y una cámara Yashica FX-3 con su objetivo estándar de 50mm f/1.8, fue el inicio de esta maravillosa afición de fotografiar el cielo hasta hoy en día.

Por aquel entonces, las cámaras digitales sólo existían en los observatorios profesionales y a nivel de aficionado tardarían más de 10 años para estar a nuestro alcance y con unos resultados mediocres comparados con la tecnología que actualmente podemos disfrutar.

Como anécdota, no me revelaron en la tienda a la que llevé este primer carrete ninguna de fotografías astronómicas, pues creyeron que habían salido subexpuestas y se trataban de errores. Ante la sorpresa del operador, tuve que insistirle para que las pasase a papel, que no se trataban de ningún error, y que las forzase más de lo habitual para intentar sacar un fondo negro. Aun así y tras varios intentos de fotos con un horrible color verde, conseguí algo que se parecía a un cielo oscuro con unas pocas estrellas.

Qué tiempos aquellos. Pero esto es historia, que no debemos olvidar para así poder apreciar mejor los equipos que tenemos disponibles hoy en día.

30 years ago, my first astrophotography – Scorpius

This is my first astrophotography, shotted a whopping 30 years ago, on June 18th, 1990 from Chiloeches (Guadalajara, Spain).

This is a 15 minute exposure shot, on a 100ASA Kodak Gold film. In it you can see almost the entire constellation of Scorpius, centred on the bright star Antares of intense red colour, to whose right the globular cluster M4 is observed as a faint greyish spot. At the bottom of the picture you can see the open star clusters NGC6281 to the East of the double star Mu Scorpii, NGC6227-6231 to the North of the double Zeta Scorpii and NGC6124 to its West.

This picture was made using a very modest equipment: an Alstar Ret-45 equatorial mount, manual tracking with 10x50 binoculars (I made a cross with 2 copper wires for visual tracking purposes) and a Yashica FX-3 camera with its standard 50mm f/1.8 lens. It was the beginning of this wonderful hobby of photographing the night sky till today.

At that time, beginning 90’s, digital cameras only existed in professional observatories and at the amateur level it would take more than 10 years to be available to us, but with mediocre results compared to the technology that we can currently enjoy.

As an anecdote, no astronomical photographs were revealed to me in the store where I took this first film, as they believed that they had been underexposed and they were errors. To the surprise of the operator, I had to insist that he transfer the photos to paper, that they were not errors, and that he forced them more than usual to try to obtain a black background. Even so, and after several attempts obtaining a horrible green colour in the background, I got something that looked like a dark sky with a few stars.

What a good times! But this is the history, which we must not forget in order to better appreciate the equipment that we have available today.
