Description

NGC 3628 an ‘end on’ spiral galaxy is about 100,000 LY across and 30m LY away in the Leo I group. A strong dust lane bisects the galaxy, and longer exposures are required to show the 300,000 LY tidal tail.

This image was something of a ‘comedy of errors’, with poor tracking in PHD. Despite a reasonable polar alignment, the guider kept driving the mount North after about 15 minutes - suspecting a slipping DEC motor, malfunctioning connection or relay in my homemade autoguider, I restarted the image three times, before realising that I had not changed the PHD profile from my LX6 smart drive mount! I ran out of time to take more colour subs.

There is significant vignetting in my 8” SCT operating at f3 - this is the best I could do with rather noisy data and I had difficulty subtracting flats, leaving artefacts. I am reasonably happy with the final image, which is an improvement on previous efforts; at least I have something to smile about.

Description: A 'rough and ready' colour image - at least R and B data (the green data was very noisy (moonlight?). Data were collected binned 2x2 and comprise 17m R and 12m B. I let Startools interpolate the green channel, and used various tools to suppress background noise and gradients.
