Description

Spanning 100,000 LY and about 40m LY distant, NGC 4565 is a spectacular edge on, probably barred spiral, with a large central bulge. Looking like a thin silver needle it is a fine sight in an eyepiece, and spectacular to image - HST reveals extraordinary detail in the strong dust lane that crosses the galaxy. NGC 4565 is similar to our Milky Way galaxy, with numerous globular clusters and at least two satellite galaxies.

I took this in the hour before astronomical twilight ended, after the moon had set, and after an evening battling with my autoguider - once I had set the right profile in PHD it worked flawlessly and I managed 12 x 300s luminance subs. I like the wider FOV at f3, and it is certainly worth me collecting more data, and some colour subs. I may also try this at f6, or f10 if we have a really decent night, to try and tease out some more detail.

Spring has sprung and it is good to have had one clear night with better seeing...
