Description

The Stephan's Quintet has been one of the hallmarks of astrophotography for many a years since its discovery in 1877. I always yearned obtaining a good image and always failed, so far. The issue for backyard astrophotographers is that the group is small and to give it justice you really need a proper image scale. So you ideally would need large fast aperture and most of them don't have the luxury of such. And neither do I. So I tried first with my 8" working at around f/8 and then I tried at f/10 which would yield a "proper" scale for the size of the group. In two years I collected all sort of light pollution effects and I shelved the partially processed frames away as I couldn't get rid of the massive chroma noise on top of not having enough quality luminance exposures. After 10 years of resting in my digital backroom I revisited the data with PI and managed to come up with something not entirely repugnant to me plumping for the lower resolution scale (and better S/N). For now that will need to suffice.
