Description

This is my first deep sky image for some time. It is broadly of an area of the constellation Centaurus and is a mosaics of two panels. It was captured with the C11 Edge HD, Hyperstar lens imaging at f/2 and using the ZWO ASI 1600MC, a One Shot Colour (OSC) camera. The captures were 120 sec long and I made ~ 30 for the first panel with the nebula and 14 for the star field to the North. The images were calibrated with bias, darks and flats.

The main nebula is IC 2944, which is a beautiful nebula in the heart of the Milky Way. This is part of the broader “Running Chicken Nebula” that I hope to eventually capture. I hate that name by the way. Often deep sky objects like this are named in this inane fashion for their stupid resemblance to something we are more familiar with on Earth. A chicken for goodness sake!

The main nebula is also known as the Lambda Centauri Nebula, for the bright blue star in its midst. The black blobs that seem to be floating on higher magnification in the foreground are known as Bok Globules and for this particular nebula as Thackeray’s Globules after their discoverer. Their origin is a bit obscure but they are associated with areas of star formation known as HII regions.

To the north is the delightful star cluster NGC 3766 also known as the Pearl Cluster. It is part of the Carina Molecular cloud. It contains 11 Be stars, 2 red super giants and 4 Ap stars.
