Description

This project was a war of attrition. I had a lot of problems with wind when I tried to capture and the low altitude contributed to my problems. The image is quite noisy and takes away significantly from the presentation. I scrapped 60-70% of my subframes for one reason or another. I wanted to post this not because I am overly pleased with it, but to be able to look back and see improvement in future years.

The Helix Nebula (Caldwell 63 / NGC 7293) is the prototype and the one of the largest planetary nebulas in the night sky. Located in the constellation of Aquarius with an approximate distance to earth of 655 light years and 3 light years across.

Planetary Nebulas form when relatively low mas stars like our sun reach a point in the stellar life cycle where the star dramatically sheds its out layer at 10-40 km per second. This is a thousand times faster than an atomic bomb. This is not a supernova (must be 8-15 times the size of the sun), but an incredible fast stellar wind. This out gassing occurs with hydrogen the red green first and then other elements like the blue oxygen in the center. The result of this stellar process eventually leads to a small white dwarf star that can be seen in the middle of the nebula.
