Description

Image of the sky around the bright Antares and Ro Ophiuchus stars.

Near the top, Ro Ophiuchus and nearby stars are immersed in blue reflection nebulae (clouds of dust that shine due to reflected light from the star).

Antares star (below left) is detached from the material that reflects the yellowish hue of the evolved star.

The red emission of hydrogen gas, characteristic of zones of star formation, also extends by the image next to the dark clouds of dust.

Located about 500 light-years away, the stellar clouds of Ophiuchus Ro are well ahead of the nearby globular star cluster M4, visible just below and to the right of the center.
