Description

This is the region surrounding Antares.

Antares (Alpha Scorpii) is the orange-red star surrounded by the orange nebulosity in the center of the picture.

The peculiarity of Antares is its size: the estimated diameter is about 600 million km.

Compare it to the diameter of the Sun, 1.4 million km, or of the orbit of Mars that is about 450 million km.

M4 is the globular cluster just below Antares in this picture.

Rho Ophiuchi is the star on the right surrounded by the blue nebula.

The cloud complex around Rho Ophiuchi is the closest star formation region to the Solar System.

It includes reflections nebulae and dark nebulae.

North in this picture is to the right.
