The distorted spiral galaxy NGC 2442 lies in the Southern hemisphere. It appears to be a member of a galaxy group, several appearing in this narrow image, along with other background galaxies that may not be co-members with NGC 2442.
Being a group member has its downsides, as NGC 2442 shows. It had a close gravitational encounter with an as-yet unidentified group member causing the observed asymmetry in its arms, chaotic patterns of clouds within the arms and disk (such as it is), and probably spawning some star-burst activity within.
