Description

This is a snapshot of Jupiter and Saturn (accompanied by the 3 days old Moon), as we approach the great Jupiter - Saturn conjunction on the day of the solstice, December 21, 2020. Then, the planets will be only 0.1 degrees apart. Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions happen every 20 years; the last one was in the year 2000. This year's conjunction will be the closest since July 6, 1623. Back then, Galileo (or anyone else on Earth) couldn't witness that great conjunction because of its apparent position near the sun. The last great conjunction to appear as close and as visible as the upcoming one occurred on March 4, 1226. 2020’s extra-close Jupiter-Saturn conjunction won’t be matched again until March 15, 2080.

Jupiter is the bright point-like object at right. Saturn which seems elongated due to its rings, is at 11 o'clock from Jupiter.

Technical Details: Canon EOS 550D at ISO 100, Samyang 135mm f/2 lens at f/4, 1/10 sec exposure. Time: 15:34 UT. Objects were approximately 21 degrees high from local horizon.
