Description

NGC 225 is an open star cluster approximately 2,100 light years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia. It was first observed in 1783 by Caroline Herschel. In an edition of 'Astronomy' (a US based periodical), a chap by the name of Rod Pommier proposed the term 'Sailboat Cluster'. This name appears to have stuck, although I must confess that I fail to see anything resembling a sailboat.

Also visible is the reflection nebula van den Bergh (vdB) 4. It is possible that this is what remains of the cloud within which NGC 225 formed. This is one indication that the cluster may be considered 'young' - it is estimated to be between 500,000 and 1,000,000 million years old (Subramaniam et al. 2006 - Bull. Astr. Soc. India 34, 315–325).

NGC 225 was photographed between 20 November 2020 and 14 February 2021.
