Description

Jupiter with Ganymede in the opposition week.

The weather gods have not been kind lately with a persistent jet stream over my location. This is one of these rare short lived periods when the seeing was good enough to warrant further treatment with WinJUPOS.

This view combines 11 best stacks recorded shortly after midnight on Sat 18 Jul AEST (12:05 to 12:22 am). Jupiter is three and a half days post opposition and about two days post closest approach at this point. The planet is sporting an impressive 47.6 arc second disk which will be improved upon slightly in the next two years (49.1 in Aug 2021 and 49.8 in Sep 2022). From the southern vantage point this and next year's apparition are best due to planet's high elevation.

Remnants of Clyde Foster's spot have just crossed the meridian in the South Tropical Zone while the GRS region rotates into view. There's an interesting elongated reddish cloud near the southern boundary of the North Polar Region. Ganymede displays good surface detail on its anti-Jovian hemisphere.
