Description

This object is a barred spiral galaxy located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices at a declination of +30 degrees. This 10.6 magnitude galaxy spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 60,000 light years.

I love so many things about this galaxy:

- The unusually long bar of uniform brightness, with a central oval bulge.

- The dark dust patch on the bottom of the bulge which appears to connect to the core.

- The graceful looping arms, which extend from each arm for 180 degrees around the disk.

- The star stream mid-region ring, encircling the core.

- The seemingly transparent areas between the outer arms and the central region.

Of course, the most interesting feature is the colorful blue (with pink accents) star streams encircling the yellow core. I am shocked at how vivid the colors in this region appear. The only color processing I did to this image was to increase the overall image saturation slightly. I did not make any color adjustments specific to this core region.

This feature is called a "nuclear starburst ring" of bright young stars. I attached the Hubble image of this core region, which as you would expect is much clearer and more detailed.
