Mars before sunrise on 1 Mar 2020 AEST with WinJUPOS reference chart.

Seeing was very good on the first day of southern autumn here in Canberra. Imaged the planet between 5:38 and 7:23 am AEST with this being the best single stack of the session. This capture combines 14,000 best frames centred on 5:43 am. I was encouraged by live preview showing surface features not detectable couple of nights before. I tweaked exposure to better handle F30 imaging ratio with average frame rate at 74 per second.

The view clearly shows a line of three Tharsis volcanoes crossing the terminator with Olympus Mons in the west. Each peak sports a bright orographic cloud. There's also a cloud / mist in Valles Marineris canyon rotating out of view. South Polar Cap is at its maximum extent with dark Mare Sirenum flanking it to the north. Solis Lacus ('the Eye of Mars') is also easy to spot and Arcadia sports a dark area.

I increased the image size by 2/3rds to make the detail more obvious. I have also re-oriented it along the polar axis. As is usually the case with small angular diameter Mars, strong edge rind was present, both on inside and outside of the planet. I brushed it away in Photoshop taking care not to impact the real data.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
