Description

This image consists of 2 Arp objects located in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +58 degrees. It is unusual to have 2 Arp objects within such as tight framing, so I was excited about the image outcome. Unfortunately, the end result doesn’t quite live up to the billing.

Arp 310 consists of 2 close and assumed interacting elliptical galaxies just above and left of the image center, and noted in the Astrobin mouseover as IC 1259. Arp 310 is about 380 million light years away and its combined width spans 1 arc-minute, equivalent to 100,000 light years.

Arp 311 is a bit unusual. It consists of IC 1259 plus the two galaxies below it – the elliptical galaxy IC 1258 & the spiral galaxy IC 1260 (PGC 60324). Why Dr. Arp included IC 1259 in 2 different Arp objects is anybody’s guess.

IC 1258 is interesting in that it has a faint dust lane spiraling out from the left side of the core, going clockwide for 180 degrees and widening as it turns.

The most interesting aspect of this image, although not quite spectacular, is that a faint starstream cloud seems to envelop all of the above 4 galaxies. This stream might be easier to see on the inverted Astrobin image. That would suggest that all 4 of these galaxies are in close proximity to each other. Indeed, that is what is reflected in the distance estimates for all 4 of these galaxies.
