In this nebula, located about 6,500 light years from Earth, brand new hot stars, formed from clouds of ionized hydrogen, shine with a light rich in ultraviolet radiation. This intense radiation in turn excites the surrounding hydrogen cloud, causing it to glow with a characteristic color, typical of regions of stellar formation.

Besides the bright gas, the series of black opaque clusters that appear on the background in some places in this image is another sign of star formation in IC 2944. These are examples of a type of objects called Bok globules. Stars would form inside many of them.

This constitutes a first experience for the composition of an image called "SHO". Meaning that the colors are formed from images taken with the filters which bring out the emission radiation of sulfur (SII), hydrogen (H-Alpha) and Oxygen (OIII) which emanates from the gases . The colors of the stars, on the other hand, are taken from images taken for the reconstruction of their natural color.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.

Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
