Description

C/2020 F3 NEOWISE has passed the closest approach to Earth. It is getting dimmer (to about mag 4). I go to Pinnacles National Park in California to get away from the Silicon Valley lights. The total exposure is about 30 minutes spanning from 22:00 to 22:53. Each sub is 30 seconds. Star trails are quite significant in comet aligned stack. Neither sigma clipping nor StarNet++ are able to completely remove the long star trails. I ended up splitting the subs into several groups. In each group the stars do not move too much so StarNet++ is able to remove the stars from the stacks. StarNet++ creates some artifacts on the coma of the comet. I had to use a mask to preserve the coma. I then recombine the starless stacks. Then finally I create the star mask using StarNet++ from star-aligned stack then combine the stars and the starless comet.
