Description

This lenticular galaxy is located 40 million light years away in the constellation of Pegasus at a declination of +30 degrees.  It is a magnitude 12 galaxy which spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, corresponding to a diameter of 50,000 light years.

Many studies have been made of this galaxy.  I was hoping to be able to image a number of its globular clusters.  I have identified a few in the mouseover, but they are extremely faint.  I recently posted a poster of extragalactic globular clusters and I was hoping to add this galaxy to the poster, but I have since learned that galaxies need to be within 5 million light years from us for the clusters to be easily seen, much less than the 40 million light years of this object.

Although not detectable in my image, this galaxy has an unusual counter-rotating core which is likely the result of a merger.  Little dust is seen in the disk.

The edge-on galaxy to the upper left, UGC 12311, is a more interesting object visually.  It is a similar distance away as NGC 7457 and could be interacting with it.
