Description

At the far right side of this image is the orange star Phi Aquarii. Just below it is Neptune, which shows just a hint of blue color. I overexposed the planet in order to reveal its moon Triton, which is the faint speck that lies just above it and to the right. North is to the right in this image.

Neptune was at a distance of 4.3 billion km from Earth at the time this photo was taken. That is very far away indeed! However, take a moment to contemplate that Phi Aquarii lies approximately 441,500 times farther away (202 light-years)! Also, consider that the Voyager 2 spacecraft took 12 years to reach Neptune, but would take about 5.3 million years to reach Phi Aquarii! Space is enormous!
