Description

This object is an open star cluster located 4000 light years away in the constellation of Puppis at a declination of -13 degrees. This magnitude 6.5 cluster of 125 stars spans 15 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 17 light years.

The cluster is comprised of colorful stars in a large, rough oval shape that stands out subtlety from the starry background . The bright star in the image is the 5th magnitude star 19 Puppis. As with most bright stars in cluster images, this star is a foreground star and not a member of the cluster.
