Description

Some elongated stars in the corners due to a slightly off spacing imaging train.

Taken over multiple nights:

Ha - June 22, 26; July 1, 2, and 8.

OIII - June 29, 30; July 3 and 8.

The Crescent Nebula, NGC 6888, is 25 light years across and is about 5000 light years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. The nebula’s central star is classified as a Wolf-Rayet star (WR 136) - very hot with a high rate of mass loss. The star is shedding its outer envelope in a strong stellar wind, ejecting the equivalent of the Sun’s mass every 10,000 years. The nebula’s complex structures are likely due to the strong stellar wind interacting with material ejected in an earlier phase. The central star is near the end of its stellar life and should ultimately go supernova.
