Description

This object is a galaxy cluster located 220 million light years away in the constellation of Andromeda at a declination of +36 degrees. The image spans 42 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a width of 3 million light years.

The brightest galaxy, just right of center, is the huge elliptical NGC 708. This galaxy is 200,000 light years in diameter. Looking closely in the full resolution view, a wide dust band is seen cutting across the galaxy core. This is thought to be left over from a previous merger of this galaxy with a spiral galaxy. The spiral galaxy (NGC 703) just below and left of NGC 708 also shows an interesting dust band in the core.

Many other interesting galaxies are seen throughout the image. Highlights for me include the oddly-armed spiral galaxy (NGC 910) in the upper center of the image, and the spiral galaxy (UGC 1319) on the left side of the image with 3 bright spiral arms.

I like the contrast between orange and blue in this image, seen in both the galaxies and stars.
