Description

The Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) and it’s companion galaxy (NGC 5195) are approximately 23 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici. The very pronounced spiral structure of the Whirlpool Galaxy is believed to be the result of the close interaction between it and its companion galaxy. Recent models indicate that the companion galaxy passed through the core of M51 500 million to 600 million years ago.
