Description

Arcing across the Autumn night sky here in central California, the California Nebula is a cloud of hydrogen and sulfur gases and dust that has a faint, wispy veil of oxygen. In this project I attempted to show the three-dimensional qualities and dynamic movement of the roiling structures in the central portion of this beautiful emission nebula. This rendition uses very low HFR data (1.6-2.4) collected in three different years with three different telescopes. I used Ha, OIII, and SII data collected using a William Optics GT71 refractor in 2019 to create the color mapping. I combined Ha and SII data from 2018 (using with a Sky Watcher Esprit 100) and in 2021 (using a William Optics FLT132) to create a master luminance to provide the framing and structure. I used RGB data for star color.
