Description

NGC 3345, which is highlighted by the astrometry here, is nothing else than a binary star - sort of " Leo's M 40". But the faint whisp NE of M 96, that looks like a tidal stream, is in fact a background galaxy in edge-on position with the catalogue name 2MFGC08391 (2MASS Flat Galaxy Catalogue). The distance to the sun appears to be 700 Million Lj, therefore it is definitely not a companion of M 96. UGC 5897 in the lower left corner, is another edge-on spiral galaxy. Half way between UGC 5897 and M 95 is a tiny and hazy spot: UGC 5869, one more spiral galaxy. Not so easy to spot are CGCG 66-1 and CGCG 66-2, due north of M 95. Because of the slightly tilted orientation of this picture, they can be found a little bit shifted to the right, just above the binary NGC 3345. None of those faint fuzzies are members of the Leo I group.
