Description

This object is a rarely imaged open cluster located 2300 light years away in the constellation of Cassiopeia at a declination of +72 degrees. The cluster spans 1 degree in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 40 light years.

The cluster contains about 80 stars. The cluster is supposed to be visible to the naked eye, but I have not been able to achieve that yet. The cluster does not stand out well from the background in the image, so I am surprised that some can see it with the naked eye.

This cluster is the 463rd entry in the Collinder catalog of 471 open clusters by Swedish astronomy graduate student Per Collinder. The catalog was published in 1931 as an appendix to his doctoral thesis, "On structural properties of open galactic clusters and their spatial distribution". Interestingly, Collinder spent most of his life as a surveyor but returned to astronomy in his retirement.
