Description

This object is a galaxy group located 45 million light years away in the constellation of Pegasus at a declination of +34 degrees. I usually like to post my images with north up, but the galaxies just looked too strange in that orientation. North is to the right in this image.

The primary object in this image is the spiral galaxy NGC 7331. This galaxy, which is 13 degrees from edge-on, is about 10 arc-minutes wide and has a diameter of 130,000 light years. It is classified as an Sbc galaxy, which means that it is a spiral galaxy with somewhat tightly coiled arms, a small nucleus, and no bar. It is the brightest member of the NGC 7331 group of galaxies named after the Deer Lick Gap in the mountains of North Carolina.

This galaxy is one of the brighter galaxies not included in the Messier Catalog. Note that the core of this galaxy appears to be slightly off-center to the right. I am not sure what is causing that effect.

The other prominent members of this galaxy group, visible above NGC 7331 in this image and not related to it, are galaxies NGC 7333, 7335, 7336, 7337, 7338, and 7340. It is estimated that they lie about 7x further away than NGC 7331.

NGC 7331 has often been compared to M31, and like that nearby galaxy, this object has a number of dwarf satellite galaxies. Because NGC 7331 is much farther away than M31, its 6 dwarf satellite galaxies barely show up in our images. In fact, they are so hard to see in my final image that I uploaded an inverted annotated view above in which they are easier to see (but still very dim!).
