Description

I love this part of the sky, and have studied it on numerous evenings in my very short career as an amateur. This is my second image at this DSO in as many months. Why not? This was taken out at our cabin (52*N). On this evening, the seeing wasn't great, lots of high wispy cloud, with some big thick cumulus rolling around wreaking havoc. It would rain later that evening, I could see the storm coming for miles... but I wanted to take advantage of the decent dark after midnight before the moon rose. I had to dodge clouds most of the evening but found ~40 min betwen storm cells, rolling over the lake from the west.

As I tore down my stuff, I could smell the rain in the air, but I managed to truck it into the cabin before any of it landed on me.

Unguided, 800 IS0, SV70 on the HEQ5.

Skysafari says:

"The North America Nebula and the nearby Pelican Nebula, (IC 5070) are in fact parts of the same interstellar cloud of ionized hydrogen. Between the Earth and the nebula complex lies a band of interstellar dust that absorbs the light of the stars and nebulae behind it, and is thereby responsible for the shape as we see it.

The distance to the nebula complex is not precisely known, nor is the star responsible for ionizing the hydrogen so that it emits light. If the star inducing the ionization is Deneb, as some sources say, the nebula complex would be about 1800 light years distant, and its absolute size would be about 100 light years."
