Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a disturbed galaxy located 160 million light years away in the constellation of Cancer at a declination of +18 degrees.  It is seen towards the upper right corner of the image.  It spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 60,000 light years.

This galaxy has all of the signs of a late stage merger.  It has significant distortion in the disk and arms, a distinct blue color, a coalesced core, and a long faint extended star stream which extends straight up for over 100,000 light years.

NGC 2744 is not the only interesting object in this image.   To the lower left is the bright elliptical NGC 2749.  In the lower left corner is the almost edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 2752,  And just above and left of this object is what appears to be an unusual 4 star cluster, all blue.
