Description

This object is a pair of interacting galaxies located 65 million light years away in the southern constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -33 degrees. The large near edge-on galaxy is NGC 1532 and the small white companion galaxy is NGC 1531. The 10.7 magnitude NGC 1532 spans 13 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a huge diameter of 250,000 light years. This galaxy is one of the largest known spiral galaxies.

The small companion galaxy is having quite a gravitational impact on the much larger galaxy. A tidal plume of stars extends out of the larger galaxy plane towards the smaller galaxy. Just below this plume, the spiral galaxy arm has been lit up with bright blue/purple star clusters, an indication of star generation from the gravitational disturbance. Slightly below the bright star cluster area, an extended "unwound" outer arm of the spiral galaxy extends far downward and to the right.

Despite being low in the sky and tough to image from my vantage point, this is one of my favorite galaxy objects. There are so many beautiful aspects of it that amaze me - the extended star streams, the vivid colors, the detailed dust lanes, the intensity of the starlight emanating from the core and the clusters, and of course the huge apparent size due to the large galaxy and our proximity to it.

In addition to its beauty, there are several mysteries here as well. One is why this fantastic object did not make Dr. Arp’s Peculiar Galaxy catalog. Another is how this object came to be nicknamed Haley’s Coronet. I searched but couldn't find an answer to either.
