Description

Another Sharpless2 object that is seen in the context of the surrounding H-alpha clouds thanks to the CMOS chip and stretching optimized with GHS.

My old Tak images says this is the second closest PN, but Galaxymap says it is the closest (whatever does not fit in my big FOV).

The Guiness Book of World Records, says it is the Helix at 700 LY.  But, there is a reference that this PN is found at 120 pc... in my StarTrek computer it says that a parsec is 3.26 ly, so this guy wins out but maybe the Helix is the closest "bright" PN?

Please note the current image centers over the brightest points, but the object is a lot larger.   The old shot is from 2015 with my Tak 180ED on a old Orion mount, not the best shot, but shows the large size of the object better.  The Tak was FL 500 and the Stellarvue is FL 932.

Sh2 216 Second Closest Planetary Nebula H-alpha

From GalaxyMap:

This is the closest known planetary nebula and one of the oldest. According to SIMBAD, the central star is the white dwarf ALS 8032.

This is the closest known planetary nebula and one of the oldest. It has a distance of 120 pc. [[url=http://galaxymap.org/cat/view/sharpless/216#note_1]1] 1. ^ Tweedy, R. W., Martos, M. GENERAL NOTE ON SHARPLESS2 OBJECTS>>>>>>>>>>>>>

There are 313 Sh2 objects.  All now imaged.

This is my collection:

Sharpless2

Wide-Angle Hydrogen Alpha Nikon Image Sh2 79-171

Please note there is also a Sharpless2 Group with now more than 2700 examples.
