Description

The Rosette Nebula, also known as Caldwell 49 and as NGC 2237, is located at a distance of roughly 1,600 parsecs or 5,200 light years in the constellation Monoceros. It is approximately 130 ly in diameter. NGC 2244 is the open cluster residing in the core of the Rosette, and the hot, young O-type stars within NGC 2244 is the source of the UV light making the Rosette fluoresce. The nebula has an estimated mass of 10,000 suns. The hollow area at the core of the 'donut' of the Rosette is caused by radiation pressure from, primarily, two of the O-type stars, HD 46223 and HD 46150. The radiation from these stars is clearing out core of the nebula. 

This image was obtained over the course of seven nights in December 2021 while trying to avoid clouds and high winds. Most of the data are H-Alpha since the moon was full during much of the imaging run, This H-Alpha data was supplemented with one night of RGB data. The Rosette covers about 1.5 degrees of sky, so I needed a two panel mosaic to capture the entire field of view presented here.
