Wow, I never dared hope for this one. Every year, Royal Museums Greenwich holds the 'astronomer photographer of the year' contest in which the best astro photos of that year are chosen by a jury of astrophotographers, artists, museum curators and publishers of astronomical magazines. Every year there are about 4500 entries of which about 130 are shortlisted and 32 winners are chosen in 11 different categories.
I have been participating in this since 2013 and in that time I was shortlisted with 7 photos, but had never won anything. My son, who has already participated 3 times, has already achieved 3rd place in the 'Young' category and won once in 2019, so that caused quite a bit of hilarity at home.
But this year that changed! I took 2nd place in the 'People and Space' category this year and I'm really happy with that. The photo was taken with my Nikon D810a and a Tamron 24-70 lens in the summer of 2020 when comet Neowise was visible.
Because in the first period this comet could only be seen just after sunset, I looked for a spot with a clear view to the north because it could be seen there. Eventually I ended up at the 'Balcony of Europe' on the Maasvlakte with an unobstructed view of the sea. There I photographed the comet and coincidentally a ship passed by during this shot which resulted in this winning photo.
