Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of large interacting elliptical galaxies located 390 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of +3 degrees. The left galaxy is NGC 5718 and the right galaxy is IC 1042.

These magnitude 14 galaxies each span about 1.5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 160,000 light years. This object was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Galaxies with Diffuse Counter-tails.

I love the complimentary shapes of these two close ellipticals. The galaxies are most dense on the sides away from each other. Tidal forces are shaping the streams.

The colors and structures of the surrounding galaxies is interesting. I particularly like the galaxy above left, 2MASX J14405642+0331455. It is 0.5 billion light years away and 80,000 light years in diameter. The looping structure is accentuated by its blue and yellow colors.
