Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a face-on spiral galaxy located 240 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of -17 degrees. This magnitude 14.5 galaxy spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years. It was classified by Dr. Arp into the category of Spiral Galaxies with a Split Arm.

There are 2 odd things here in addition to the galaxy. A blue star appears in the foreground immediately next to the core and obscures the galaxy somewhat. More interstingly, there appears to be a companion, unidentified by Dr. Arp, at the end of the bottom arm. This object could also be a star, but Arp 7 is slightly disturbed in this region and there appears to be a bit of star formation brightening the galaxy arm immediately to its left. If this is a companion, it is a small dwarf at about 10,000 light years in diameter.
