Description

This object is a large barred spiral galaxy located 80 million light years away in the constellation of Ophiuchus at a declination of +7 degrees. It is very large, spanning a diameter of 150,000 light years. The galaxy looks almost face-on to us but it is actually inclined at about 45 degrees to our line of sight.

The star clusters and dust lanes throughout the arms are more distinct than I would expect for something that is 80 million miles away. Like most galaxies, the inner core area is yellowish, transitioning to a blue tint as one moves towards the outer edge of the disk.

Of all of the small galaxies that I have imaged, this one may have the most foreground Milky Way stars directly in front of it (over 100 by my count).
