Description

The picture shows part of the Mare Imbrium, which is bordered in the east by the mountain range of the Alps. This mountain world is traversed by a striking 700 m wide ridge, the so-called Vallis Alpes, from southwest to northeast. The lunar Alps extend over a length of 250 km and have an average width of 50 km. To the southeast of this mountain range is the circular crater Cassini with the two smaller structures Cassini A (steep places in the SE) and Cassini B. To the west of Cassini we come across a 2,250 m high solitary mountain called Mons Piton. To the south-southeast, the Aristillus crater, and further west, the mountains of Spitzberg, shape the landscape of the Mare Imbrium. Worth mentioning in the north is the mighty crater Plato, whose eastern caldera has peaks of different heights. This can be seen very nicely from the course of the silhouette in the crater.
