Description

IC 2177 is a region of nebulosity that lies on the border between the constellations Monoceros and Canis Major. Discovered by Welsh amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts, he described it as, "Pretty bright, extremely large, irregularly round, very diffuse." The name Seagull Nebula is generally to the red, Hydrogen-alpha emission region, but it more properly includes the neighboring regions of dust clouds, reflection nebulae, and open star clusters, including NGC 2323.
